How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

This is one of the most common questions we hear at Face Fit. The answer may be a bit more complicated than most patients expect, because, as we explain to our patients, maintenance treatments have the ability to extend the results indefinitely.

There are several factors that play a role in a filler’s longevity, including the filler’s material, consistency and the area of the face where it is injected. Additionally, every person is different as is the speed at which their body metabolises fillers, so this factor also plays an important role in the answer to this question.

In this article, we will break down how long, on average, fillers last in the most common injection areas. It is important to keep in mind that no matter where you choose to have filler injected, regularly scheduled maintenance treatments will be required for the results to be maintained.

The Lasting Power of Fillers Based on Injection Area

How Do Fillers Last Around the Eyes?

Using a filler around the eye area can last 12 months or longer when treating the tear through the under eye area. The skin around the eyes is delicate and thin skin, so it is important to choose a filler that is firm enough to support the thin skin in that area.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last Around the Cheeks?

Depending on the type of filler you use, you can achieve plumper, firmer cheeks for up to 24 months. Touch up treatments every 6-12 months are recommended to achieve and maintain the best results.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last Around the Lips?

Lip enhancement using fillers can last up to 12 months or more with recurring follow up treatments. For the lips, it is common for the patient to need up to 3 treatments before the desired results are achieved.

The first couple of dermal filler treatments to the lips may be compressed. The most popular and effective dermal fillers for the lips are ones made up of softer, more supple gels.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last Around the Mouth and Chin?

Fillers injected around the mouth and chin will typically last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years dependent on the type of filler used.

Again, the results will be dependent on how often you seek follow up treatments. During the first few months after being injected, the visible results will remain the same because fillers absorb water.

At about the midpoint of the expected duration of your fillers, you will start to notice that the filler’s volume has begun to decrease.

The key to maintaining your results is a phased approach that anticipates the decreasing volume and tackles it before your results are completely lost.
