Who needs moisturiser? The short answer; we all do. A common misconception in the world of skin care is that if you have oily skin, you do not need to moisturise. The truth is that to maintain balance, a moisturiser is a non-negotiable when it comes to your skin, whether you’re dry, normal or oil prone.
If you have oily skin, your skin isn’t necessarily well hydrated. Having an oily or combination skin type just means your skin has a very effective barrier against attackers such as germs and pollutants.
It’s commonly believed that oily skin already makes enough oil and doesn’t need any more. We need oil to keep our skin soft and to maintain the barrier that keeps moisture in and environmental irritants out
Here are our three key things to note for those with oily or combination skin.
- Depriving your skin of moisture can result in more oil!
That’s right, the notion that oily skin doesn’t need more hydration means that you may worsen the amount of oil build up as your skin will begin to create more in order to overcompensate. Very similar to when we strip the natural oils in our hair by over shampooing. Even though it may seem strange to moisturize oily skin, it’s still something you should do. Skin that’s oily still needs moisture so oil glands don’t produce excess oil.
- Select the right moisturiser
Using the right moisturiser can reduce the oiliness of your skin.
There are many moisturising products that are created specifically for oily skin. These products are light, fast absorbing, and don’t leave your skin feeling greasy. The correct product is key in maintaining balance, skin integrity and health. Although those prone to oily skin still need to moisturise, consider an oil-free, lightweight product. It will hydrate your skin without being too heavy, clogging pores or adding to the oil build up.

- Don’t over-cleanse!
Even though you may feel like a beacon of light, glowing from your forehead it’s important to refrain from over cleaning. Over washing the skin will once again strip all the natural oils from your face telling your skin it needs to work extra hard to reproduce.
Cleanse twice a daily only using a balancing moisturiser that gentle washes away excess oils while restoring balance.
